In class we defined each term for volcanoes and earthquakes.  The list is below.  Students are also required to draw and color pictures to help support their definitions.  There is a vocabulary quiz on Thursday and the assignment will be due then as well.  So make sure you study!  Vocabulary List

Welcome to 2nd Semester!

Volcanoes!

It's 2nd semester, time to buckle down and get busy!  We are off and running talking about volcanoes now.  We have three types of volcanoes: strato/composite, shield and cinder cones.  All have different characteristics.  Today in class we focused in general how volcanoes are formed, where they are formed and what their eruptions look like.  Feel free to take a look at the powerpoint below to inform yourself of all the great stuff you might have missed today!

End of Semester!

Congrats on making it through your first semester of 8th grade!  Plan on working harder 2nd semester and getting ready for high school.  Enjoy your long weekend again!

Magnetic Reversals-Yeah!

Alright, first of all in class we went over the Wind Turbine Farm Siting Activity.  I emphasized to the student's to make sure they use supporting details and/or data to support their answers.  Then we watched a short video clip on magnetic reversals/sea floor spreading.  Finally, we read the article below and the students are expected to write a summary of the article about 6-8 sentences. It is due tomorrow.  Speaking of tomorrow....how about a little BINGO review for the test?  Also, stay tuned...I will be posting the review sheet on the blog as well.  Anyone that comments on that post will get extra credit!

Super Volcano-Yellowstone National Park

In class today, we watched the video How the Earth Was Made:Yellowstone  While watching the video, the students need to complete the worksheet that goes along with it.  This video is very informative and ties in a lot of what we have discussed the past two weeks along with the somewhat difficult idea of a hot spot.  A hot spot is a place in the crust in which a mantle plume rises and creates volcanic actions.  If in the ocean, it creates volcanic islands.  If on land, it creates volcanoes as well as geysers and such like what we see at Yellowstone.  Have a great three day weekend and see you all on Tuesday!

Crossword Review

In class, we skimmed over the reading in section 1.4 about convergent boundaries and the different types of subductions and/or collisions.  Then we worked on the crossword that you can access at the link below.  I will tell you the answer to 11 across is plasticity.  We have not covered that term so there you go!  I will be out tomorrow but we will be watching How the Earth Was Made-Yellowstone and there is a worksheet to go along with the movie, it'll be posted tomorrow for you if you are absent.  Also, a link to the video as well.
