Super Volcano-Yellowstone National Park

In class today, we watched the video How the Earth Was Made:Yellowstone  While watching the video, the students need to complete the worksheet that goes along with it.  This video is very informative and ties in a lot of what we have discussed the past two weeks along with the somewhat difficult idea of a hot spot.  A hot spot is a place in the crust in which a mantle plume rises and creates volcanic actions.  If in the ocean, it creates volcanic islands.  If on land, it creates volcanoes as well as geysers and such like what we see at Yellowstone.  Have a great three day weekend and see you all on Tuesday!

Plate Boundary Map

Today in class our goal was to identify the location of various plates, continents as well as their boundary types.  These don't need to be memorized, the point is having a visual of how the Earth is made up of the plates and knowing what landforms are created/destroyed by these boundaries.

21 major plates and their boundary types

Above is a map you can use as a reference or there is one along with the worksheet below.  Feel free to use the internet as well.

Tying Up Loose Ends...

Today in class we finished our powerpoint over Plate Tectonics and then Read section B1.3 about divergent boundaries.  We discussed all three boundary types in the powerpoint as well as island arcs, volcanic arcs and hot spots.  Hawaii is one of those hot spots!  Lot's of information was given today.  The powerpoint is on last Thursday's post for your viewing pleasure.  Tomorrow we will be working on a Plate Boundary Map.  Colored pencils and/or crayons are strongly suggested in completing the activity.

Wind Farm Siting Activity

Today we began trying to figure out a hypothetical problem of where to site a wind farm based on various factors.  These factors include:  wind speed, tower height, location, cost, community opinions.  We worked in groups of two to three in order to accomplish this.  This activity requires at least today and Monday in class to complete.  The whole packet is down below for your viewing pleasure.  Have a great weekend!
